Personal Note: While the focus of this article is MLM recruiting, the ideas covered apply to any type of sales.
I recently watch a video made by a network marketing professional who personally recruits more than 20 associates a month. It sums up what it really takes to successfully recruit people into your network marketing company. This article sums up the key points of that video. If after reading this article, you would like to see the video, send me an email and I will be happy to forward you a link to where you can get access to it.
The successful network marketer knows that sponsoring new business partners is a sorting process.. The reality is that 8 out of 10 people that you talk to will not be qualified to join your opportunity. Your looking for the 2 quality candidates for your opportunity. Your primary objective is to present your opportunity to those people who qualify for your opportunity, not convince them.
You see, finding new business associates is like recruiting a new employee for a top corporate position. If you were Bill Gates would spend your time trying to convince everyone who applied for a job, or would you interview candidates and then make a job offer to the most qualified. Network marketing professionals have the mindset of a corporate recruiter. The corporate recruiter places ads for the position they are trying to fill and then interviews the applicants and select those people who qualify for the position. They follow the 4 S formula: Some will, Some won’t So what, See whose next!
The Oyster and The Pearl Philosophy
When speaking to people about your product or opportunity, think of the oyster and the pearl. If you were looking for pearls, you would open an oyster, see if there was a pearl in it and then open the next one. You would not take an oyster that doesn’t have a pearl and try to hatch one, you would simply move to the next oyster.
Our business is very similar, you’re looking for a few pearls who are looking for the benefits that your product or opportunity provides. The truth is that most of the people you speak to will not be open to your offer. That’s neither good nor bad. It’s simply reality.
Your job is not to convince an oyster to grow a pearl, it’s to find the pearl by simply presenting what you have and collecting decisions. In our business Some will, some won’t, that’s OK, move on.
I could go on but you get the idea. When you are looking to “recruit” into your opportunity, your objective is to sort through your “applicants” and make an offer (present your opportunity) to those who qualify for your business .
Presenting Your Opportunity
Once you have a qualified prospect use your tools and systems to present your opportunity by directing them to one of your presentation tools or systems. It could be a DVD, a recorded conference call or an online video. Let your business tools do the talking for you. If you’re company does not provide effective business tools, locate some generic ones and use them, go upline to see what tools your leaders are using. When presenting your opportunity to a qualified prospect, the more you say to a qualified prospect the less you make. Your mouth is not a tool. I’m sure we’ve all had the experience of explaining your opportunity to a red hot qualified prospect, only to have them say, I have to think it over, or you schedule a follow-up appointment and when you call your prospect does a vanishing act.
Don’t Talk Yourself Out of a Sale
How many times have you talked yourself out of a new customer or associate? Would it have not been better to simply let your companies tools do the talking for you? Have you taken the time to select the tools that you want to use to present your products or opportunity? If not, why not?
Why is this? Most often, it’s because you talked too much. The people you talk to will observe what you do and say. Since 95% of our prospects are afraid of selling, if you come off as a sales person, they will not join your opportunity. Put yourself in the mind of a potential business partner.
Example 1: A friend stops over and spends 40 minutes telling you how great his new opportunity is, how great the products are, how great the compensation plan is, how much money he can make if he would just join you. He then goes on to tell you that you don’t have to sell, you simply share the opportunity using some of the great marketing tools the company has and spends another 10 minutes trying to convince you to join. What is he doing, selling and selling hard. He is throwing up all over you. Would you join? Not likely, since over 95% of the population would rather eat nails then sell.
Example 2: You mention that your job is more difficult, your not spending enough time with your family, that money is getting tight. Your friend says I might have a solution for you and gives you a DVD to watch, or has you watch one online. Maybe he has you dial in to a recorded call. He sets a time to check back with. When he checks back he simply asks what you thought of the information. You respond it seems interesting. He then sends you to a web site to learn more about your products and schedules a time to follow up. You like what you see on the web site so when your friend calls you ask about what it costs to get involved. He then has you go to a web site and watch a brief movie that explains your options or he sends you to a recorded call that explains how to get started. He then explains briefly that all he does is share information and let you decide if his product, service or opportunity is right for you. Would you join? Chances are if you like what you saw and it was within you means, you would.
Which approach is more professional? Which approach uplifts the image of our industry? Which approach is more effective? Which approach are you using?
In summary
As a professional network marketer your job is too qualify your prospect, point them to the right tool and then collect a decision. Not everyone you meet is a match for what you have. Your job is not convincing, it is sorting. You simply share what you and allow others the dignity of making their own decision.

Too often people will join a social networking site such as Facebook or Myspace. They create a profile and then sit back and wait for the online world to beat a path to their profile page. Unfortunately, this approach is doomed to failure. To be successful is social networking we need to be proactive. The following ABC’s of Successful Social Networking will give you an easy to follow track to run on. Follow these guidelines and you soon learn the real power in adding social networking to your marketing toolbox.
A: Add Friends
The success of your social networking efforts depends on the number of people in your network and the quality of the relationships you have with them. It’s often been said that it’s who you know that determines your success. Not true. It’s who knows you and recognizes the value you bring to the table that will determine your success in business and in life. Here are five steps to that you can use to maximize your effectiveness:
Meet people on social sites such as Facebook by searching the directory, groups and forums for people who share similar interests and match your picture of the people you are looking to meet. Look for people whose pictures are warm, friendly and professional. Then send them a friend request. Send out at least ten friend requests a day. That would be 50 a week. If you only have a 50% acceptance rate, you would be adding 25 online friends a week. Always include a brief note with your friend requests. This will improve your acceptance rate by 50% or more.
When someone accepts your friend request, always send a thank you message and begin the relationship building process.
B: Be Visible
Adding friends is only the first step in being successful in the social networking world. You need to keep your name and profile in the minds of your online connections. Some ways you can do this are:
- Post status updates
- Commenting on your online friends wall or profile page
- Join groups and posting tips and ideas on their discussion boards
- Post bulletins or notes on your profile
- Answer emails
- Commenting on your friends’ status reports
- Posting on Twitter
The key is to be consistent. You don’t need to spend a lot of time doing this, but you must be consistent. Allocate 15 to 30 minutes a day to creating visibility.
Power Tip: Use sites such as ping.fm and friendfeed to post your updates quickly to all of the social networks that you belong to.
C: Create Value
Just being visible is not enough. You need to create value for the people on your network. Your goal is not just to have someone remember you, but remember you as competent, professional and friendly. Someone who they can look to for answers to questions in your field of expertise.
Use your status updates, blog postings and bulletins to establish yourself as a competent and personable person by posting tips, ideas, motivational quotes and articles that can help the people in your network achieve their personal and business goals. Be a go-giver and not a go-getter.
Looking for ways to help. Introduce friends who may add value to each other, watch your friend’s status updates, respond to their wall postings and tweets, look for items that allow you to recognize, and uplift these people.
Power Tip: I was listening to a call by Doug Firebaugh and he gave a suggestion that sums up the real secret to great relationships. He called it the Million Dollar Idea. “Make every person you meet, feel like a million dollars”. I like to carry this one step further by helping every person feel better about themselves. I want my online friends to say “I like me better, when I’m with you”.
That sums up the ABC’s of Successful Social Networking, nothing new, just practical common sense ideas that you can use right now to help you find the success that you want from your online networking. But, then again, common sense is not always common.

With the advent of the Internet more and more are turning to online systems to help build their business. Unfortunately success will always remain a dream for most of these people because they have never learned what it really takes to grow a network marketing business.
There are certain key elements to being successful in your network marketing business. Eliminate any one and the success you experience will be severely limited. Let’s look at 7 things that you must do to achieve success in any network marketing business.
Have a Big Dream: What vision do you have for your business. Why did you join your company? What do you want from life that our industry can provide. Write your dreams down, keep them in front of you at all times. To paraphrase the Bible: “Without Vision People Perish” Without a big why, you business will perish, with one, you can accomplish anything.
Use a System: To succeed in our industry, you must have a simple duplicable system for exposing and presenting your opportunity on a daily basis. Your system should include tools that you can use to attract quality prospects and professionally introduce your products and opportunity.
Be a Learner: Marketing principles remain the same, but the techniques change as technology advances. Learn what the top earners in our industry are doing to market their business. What systems are they using to attract prospects? What tools do they use to present their opportunity? So many people fail purely because they do not know how to market properly and give up without giving themselves or their business a chance.
Make Personal Contact: While there are many ways to market your business both online and offline, the real key to success is making that personal connection. More and more people are trying to use online systems to avoid personal contact. This is a big mistake. Use your online marketing systems to attract quality prospects, then pick up the phone and talk to them.
Help Your Team: When you get a new distributor you don’t just stop there. In fact this where the real work begins because you have to help this newbie what you just did. Training is key because statistics show that if a new distributor isn’t making any money after 90 days they WILL drop out. Training is not the same as babysitting, or doing things for your associates that they should do themselves. Quality network marketing companies have training systems in place. Your job is to point them to those systems, answer their questions and help them become accountable for their actions.
Take Action: You can have the best system but if you fail to use it, your success will be limited. In our business we need to connect new people every day, use our tools to present our opportunity, follow up and teach our associates to do the same. Stop making excuses and start getting closer to that dream!
Grow Personally Every Day: Work on yourself, more than you work on your business. The better you get, the faster your business will grow.
Question: Do you have a big dream? Do you have a system for presenting your opportunity? Are you making personal contact with your prospects. Are you helping your team? Do you take action every day? Are you growing personally?

Achieving success in your MLM business always takes place in the framework of high expectation. You attract to your business whatever you focus on with the expectation that it will become a reality.
Network marketing professionals create a massive vision for their business. They know what they want from their business and why they want it. When a negative thought enters a professional network marketers mind, they immediately shift to their vision and are grateful for the path that they are on.
Nothing happens by accident. The thoughts, memories, beliefs, values, and expectations you plant in your brain instantly set up an attractive force, which governs the results in your life.
List what you want to achieve in your business and the actions you must take to achieve the success you want and deserve. Back that up with action and belief and soon your vision will become your reality.
Believe it and you will see it. So many people mistake the idea that they must see it and then believe it. Believe that it doesn’t work for you, and you get your wish. Believe in the process. Having a big vision backed by action and belief is vital to your success.
Question: Do you have big dreams? Do you have a vision that makes you want to get up and enjoy the magic that life offers. If not, why not? If it is true that we get what we expect, and it is, why not expect the best?
Quote: “Dream lofty dreams, and as you dream, so shall you become. Your Vision is the promise of what you shall one day be. Your Ideal is the prophecy of what you shall at last unveil.” — James Allen<

In today’s challenging marketplace network marketers are looking for ways to generate extra income to pay for their prospecting efforts.
The question is how do you go about about adding one or more income streams to your network marketing business without diluting your recruiting efforts or working 24 hours a day?
What follows is an approach used by top network marketers to create multiple income streams on autopilot and produce top quality leads. It consists of:
- Online Marketing System
- Autoresponder
- Presentation Website
Online Marketing System.
Your Online Marketing System consists of a number of lead capture pages that present free or low-cost offers directed to online marketers looking or ways to use the Internet to generate leads and build their business. A special report, a newsletter, free training, or a business building tool.
When someone visits your capture page and responds to your offer by providing their contact information, they are are automatically added to your auto-responder. Your auto-responder immediately sends your new lead a link where they can get their free tool.
In addition to your lead capture pages, your online system should be linked to an autoresponder that has pre-written messages. Each message should include one of the following:
- An article that contains valuable free information
- A link to a capture page that presents free information or tools. When someone visits this page and requests your free information they are directed to a sales page for an information product that they can purchase.
- A link to your presentation page.
Autoresponder
Having an autoresponder is a must for anyone serious about making money online.
An autoresponder is an service that automatically sends a variety of email messages that provide helpful information, links to free tools, additional income ideas and offers for products and services.
These messages not only enhance your relationship with your leads, they put more money in your pocket. When someone takes advantage of one of your product or service offers, they benefit and you increase your income.
It’s important that you’re messages provide real value and not just sales hype.
Presentation Website
A Presentation Website is similar to your Online Marketing System, except that it is focused on presenting information about your primary opportunity. It is NOT a source for generating leads, although many of the “Prospecting Systems” out there say that they are.
Your Presentation Website should have information about the network marketing industry, your marketing system and who you are and how you can help them. When someone expresses an interest in learning about your primary opportunity. Send them to your Presentation Website, then follow up with them to answer their questions and help them get started.
The real power in this approach is that you make money on autopilot whether or not someone joins your primary company. Which is why it used by so many top network marketing professionals.
